Dear Sketchbookers,

We recently had a lovely session with

where we explored Landscapes with Collage. While talking with other artists, I realized back then that the process I use for making my collage might be very peculiar. As this approach may be different from what you typically find elsewhere, so I've created this post with all the little tricks I use. In the video, you will see how I made my first collages, and how, at some point I realized I lost some of the sketch lines. I stopped and thought of creative ways to get around that, and then I used that for all the collaged dolls. I love how my problem-solving skills have helped me when I do art, and I find not-so-conventional paths around it.

Materials for this process:

  • Unpainted collage paper. For the paper dolls and this demo, I used this paper, but for the landscapes, I used recycled copy paper.

  • Paint and other painting materials. I use normal acrylic paints and acrylic gouache. I made the mistake of using gouache or poster paint in this demo and my fingers are all full of paint. Don’t make the same mistake I did!

  • A pencil. I am using these mechanical pencils for everything. Even though they are not water-soluble (as I was preaching), they have so many colors and they don’t bother me on my final art.

  • Scissors. I have 2 pairs: This one is for details, and this one is for big shapes, because it is very comfortable.

  • A lightbox. This is the one that I use - A3 size to have more space.

  • Glue. Everyone’s favorite is this one, but I have also used this one. Some of the glues don’t dry matte, so you will see some of it. Check before you glue your final piece.

I also broke down the steps for this process:
