Dear Sketchbookers,
It is my pleasure to introduce you to an amazing person and one of my newest friends,
. I met her through this platform and we have actually met personally! Even though it took us 3 times, we finally have a picture that proves that:In this post we will get to meet Lisa, her work and her corner of favorites (which is a new concept that we will have for The Sketchbook Games collaborators!). Lisa will also tell us about the materials for the sketchbook you can do at home and she even made to do a video on how to do it! The cherry on top? She will also present one of her self-made sketchbooks, and I have to tell, you it is a dream!
Hi, so glad to meet you!
My name is Lisa and I am a self-taught mixed media artist residing in Vienna. As a kid I created a lot of art, but I decided to pursue education in a business school and later a career in academia. I always felt that something was missing in my life and came back to art in 2019 because I needed to carve out space for myself and my creativity. Making art feels like coming home for me, hence the name of my publication is Art As Home.
Art helps to focus my mind and gives me a sense of purpose. I create art that feels engaging, light and peaceful and hopefully gives a sense of calm. My art is not about specific objects, but more about feelings and impressions. I am inspired by nature and interpret its elements in an abstract, expressive and loose way often using unlikely colours, bold marks and non-linear perspective.
I am especially interested in making art with focus on practice and the creative process:
In my newsletter I share monthly Sparks of inspiration, regular updates about my current work called Studio notes and other posts about the creative process, creativity and creative life in general. Take a look inside my sketchbooks in one of my Sketchbook tours. Excited to announce that coming soon on Art as Home are monthly creative prompts!
Lisa’s Favorites Corner
Favorite art supplies:
Watercolour paints (take a look at my current palette)
Watercolour crayons & pencils (Neocolor II from Caran d'Ache and Albrecht Dürer from Faber Castell)
Soft body acrylics (though I am still looking for the perfect brand!)
Moleskine watercolour notebook
Royal Talens Art Creation sketchbook
Any random papers I can make collage from and a glue stick!
Working in sketchbooks is a central part of my creative practice. It is a safe place for me to play, practice and grow my artistic skills. Sketchbooks are accessible, forgiving and versatile - I collect inspiration, colours, ideas and experiments for my future projects and refer to them when I need a little bit of inspiration. I believe that it is through play and experiments that we learn the most.
I especially love working in handmade sketchbooks and today we’ll create one together!
Materials you’ll need for the project
Drawing paper (A4, 10 sheets)
Any thick paper for your cover (I am using craft paper, cut to A4 size)
Any sharp tool to poke holes in your pages (e.g. an awl)
Paper clips
Needle & thread
Pencil
Collage papers and glue to embellish the cover
Scissors
A ruler
Some ideas to try in the sketchbook
Explore supplies that you didn’t use for a long time or try something new.
Give yourself a time limit - e.g. 10, 20, 30 minutes to finish a page.
Create compositional thumbnails (e.g. abstract compositions, still life arrangements, or landscapes).
Mix and swatch colours from a reference (e.g. a magazine page or artwork by our favourite artist)
Create pages with collected inspiration - colour swatches, compositions, marks, etc.
How to do your first Sketchbook?
